The Catholic University of Lublin (KUL), founded in 1918, is one of the oldest universities in Poland and is the only one possessing full state and Church rights.
KUL is dynamically growing university with a strong both national and international position. During the last ten years the number of KUL's students has nearly quadrupled. At present, KUL enrolls over 20,000 students (including 650 foreign students in 2004/05) in its various programmes. The University is open to all Poles, from Poland and abroad, as well as to foreign
students. The university has a reputation for high standards of education and research, the profile of which is determined by humanistic tradition of the university as well as openness to the needs of a contemporary
man.
The university offers a very wide range of master-degree programmes: daytime and evening, external, residential and extramural as well as doctoral studies in eight faculties: the Faculty of Theology, the Faculty of Law, Canon Law and Administration, the Faculty of Philosophy, the Faculty of Humanities, the Faculty of Social Sciences, the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, off-Campus Faculty of Legal and Economic Sciences in Tomaszów Lubelski and off-Campus Faculty of Social Sciences in Stalowa Wola. KUL graduates receive Bachelor’s, Master’s, Post-Diploma and Doctoral degree
diplomas. Most of the academic disciplines have already gained a Certificate of the Quality of Education, i.e. the accreditation of the University Accreditation Commission and redesigned their study programmes in line with European Credit Transfer System. KUL boasts a School of Polish Language and Culture, which runs highly popular summer and one-year courses for foreigners from all over the world. The university has ongoing cooperation with 59 foreign research and academic institutions. KUL has been participating in such European programmes as SOCRATES/Erasmus since 1999/2000 and CEEPUS since 1998/1999. KUL is also a member of many international academic associations and organizations, including International Federation of Catholic Universities (IFCU), European Federation of Catholic Universities (FUCE), International Association of Universities (IAU), and European University Association (EUA). KUL's staff are involved in numerous research projects carried out in collaboration with foreign partners in the framework of international programmes and bilateral academic
agreements.
Due to Lublin's geographical location and its history, KUL has strong ties both with the East and the West. The graduates and the faculty of KUL hold many important positions in social, cultural, ecclesiastical and political life. Among them was Pope John Paul II, who held the Chair of Ethics in KUL's Faculty of Philosophy for many years.
KUL researchers are involved in numerous research projects carried out in collaboration with foreign partners in the framework of 5th and 6th Framework programme, Jean Monnet Project as well as within bilateral agreements. KUL has strong ties both with the East and the West. KUL is, among others, a co-founder of the European College of Polish and Ukrainian Universities, an institution jointly founded by Lublin and Ukrainian universities for mutual cooperation in advancing the common interests of Ukraine and
Poland.
